Endpoint
A specific URL path in an API that represents a resource or action. Example: `GET /contacts` retrieves contacts; `POST /contacts` creates one. Each endpoint has defined parameters, authentication requirements, and response formats.
Expert insight
An API endpoint's behavior can change between its documented version and a newer one without warning if a vendor doesn't enforce strict API versioning, calling an endpoint without specifying an API version can mean a vendor's backend update silently changes your workflow's behavior. Pinning to an explicit API version where the vendor supports it avoids this class of surprise breakage.
In a real workflow
POST /v1/invoices creates an invoice; GET /v1/invoices/{id} reads one.
Common mistakes
- Calling deprecated endpoints.
- Exposing internal endpoints without authentication.
