Frequently asked questions

Are these open-source tools actually free to use commercially?

Most of the projects on this list ship under permissive licences (MIT, Apache 2.0) that allow commercial use, but a few use AGPL or a source-available licence with restrictions once you resell the software itself. Always check the LICENSE file in the repo before deploying, licensing is the one thing worth reading before you build on any of these.

Do I need to self-host all of these, or is there a hosted option?

Several of them (Cal.com, Chatwoot, Documenso, Supabase, Nango) offer an official hosted/cloud version alongside the open-source code, so you can start on their managed plan and migrate to self-hosting later if you want full control. The rest are self-host only.

What's the real trade-off between self-hosting one of these and paying for a managed SaaS?
