GraphQL
An API query language that lets clients request exactly the data they need no more, no less. Contrast with REST APIs that return fixed data structures. Some modern platforms (Shopify, GitHub) use GraphQL; it requires different handling in automation workflows.
Expert insight
A GraphQL API lets the caller specify exactly which fields it wants back in a single request, useful for avoiding the multiple round-trips a REST integration might need to assemble the same data, but it requires the automation tool used to build the query correctly, most visual automation platforms handle GraphQL less smoothly than REST and need a custom code step to construct the query body.
In a real workflow
A Shopify GraphQL query fetches only the order fields needed, in one request.
Common mistakes
- Requesting huge nested queries that hit cost limits.
- Ignoring errors returned alongside partial data.
