Base URL
The root domain of an API endpoint e.g., `https://api.hubspot.com/crm/v3/`. All API paths are appended to the base URL. Storing it as a variable makes switching between staging and production environments trivial.
Expert insight
Hardcoding a base URL (including the environment: sandbox vs. production) directly into workflow steps instead of storing it as a variable means every workflow needs manual editing when moving from testing to live, and it's easy to forget one and accidentally send test data to a production endpoint or vice versa.
In a real workflow
The API base URL is stored once as https://api.example.com/v2, and each request adds the path.
Common mistakes
- Hard-coding full URLs everywhere, which makes a version change painful.
- Mixing sandbox and production base URLs.
