Backoff (exponential)
A retry strategy where each successive retry waits progressively longer e.g., 10s, 30s, 2min, 10min. Prevents overloading a struggling API while still recovering from transient failures automatically.
Expert insight
Linear retries (every 30s) hammer a down API. Exponential backoff is polite and more likely to succeed.
In a real workflow
A failed call to a payment API is retried after 1 second, then 2, then 4, then 8, giving the service time to recover instead of hammering it.
Common mistakes
- Retrying instantly in a loop, which turns a short outage into a self-inflicted denial of service.
- Retrying requests that are not safe to repeat, such as charging a card, without idempotency.
Complexity level
Requires some familiarity with automation concepts.
