Batch processing

Executing automation logic on a group of records at once rather than one at a time. Used for bulk email sends, report generation, and data migrations. More efficient than looping, but requires careful error isolation per record.

Expert insight

Batch size matters more than it looks like it should. A batch of 1,000 records sent to an API in one call often hits a payload size limit or a timeout that a batch of 100 wouldn't. The right batch size is whatever the receiving system's documented limits allow, found by checking the docs, not by assuming bigger is always more efficient.

In a real workflow

Every night, the day’s Shopify orders are processed in groups of 100 to update inventory forecasts and accounting in one pass.

Common mistakes

  • Making batches so large that one bad record fails the whole run.
  • Not recording which batch was processed, so a rerun duplicates data.
