Mapping (field)

The process of connecting fields from a source system to fields in a destination system. Example: `lead.email` from a web form → `properties.email` in HubSpot. Field mapping must account for type differences, required fields, and null handling.

Expert insight

A mapping configuration that's buried inside a workflow's individual nodes, rather than documented in one place, becomes a maintenance liability the moment someone other than the original builder needs to update it, they have to open and inspect every node to find where a given field is actually mapped.

In a real workflow

Status values "Open" and "Closed" in one tool are mapped to "active" and "done" in another.

Common mistakes

  • Unmapped values that become empty.
  • Mapping tables nobody maintains.
