Active polling

Repeatedly checking an external service for new data on a fixed schedule. Contrast with webhooks, which push data immediately. Active polling wastes API quota and introduces latency use only when no webhook option exists.

Expert insight

Active polling (checking continuously at short intervals, e.g. every few seconds) trades API quota and cost for lower latency, appropriate only when near-instant reaction genuinely matters, for anything less time-sensitive, a longer polling interval or, better, an event-driven webhook, achieves the same result far more efficiently.

In a real workflow

A workflow checks a supplier’s order status endpoint every five minutes until the order ships, then stops.

Common mistakes

  • Polling forever after the job is done.
  • Polling so often that the API blocks you.
