Transformation function
A piece of code that converts data from one format to another. Examples: splitting a full name into first and last name fields, converting a timestamp to a readable date, or formatting a number as a currency string.
Expert insight
A transformation function that's duplicated across several workflows (the same date-formatting logic copy-pasted into five different places) means a bug fix or business rule change has to be applied five times, and it's easy to miss one, centralizing shared transformation logic into a single reusable function avoids this class of drift.
In a real workflow
A reusable function converts any address into the format the shipping API expects.
Common mistakes
- Duplicated transformations with small differences.
- Untested functions.
