Ghost step
A workflow step that runs but produces no observable output often a silent failure or misconfigured node. Ghost steps are the hardest bugs to find because the workflow appears to succeed while actually doing nothing useful.
Expert insight
A "ghost step" (a workflow node left in place but disconnected or disabled during earlier debugging) that nobody removes afterward becomes a trap for the next person editing the workflow, who reasonably assumes every visible step is actually active. Cleaning up disabled or orphaned steps after debugging, not just leaving them dormant, keeps a workflow's visible structure honest.
In a real workflow
A workflow still calls an old tool that nobody uses, slowing runs and hiding costs.
Common mistakes
- Never cleaning up old steps.
- Removing steps without checking dependents.
Complexity level
Requires some familiarity with automation concepts.
